I must admit before my years of blackberry abuse I was a die hard TREO fan, even switched back from the Blackberry 8800 to the Treo 750…but woke up and grabbed a Curve. But, while writing my latest for Blackberry Insight on my struggles to be a one device guy..no laptop..no desktop..just me and my Curve on the weekends and throughout most of the day. I realized that the Doomed Palm Foleo, was maybe on the cutting edge, we all love the qwerty keyboards, but I must admit that there is nothing better than a real keyboard for long assignments and long emails. The ability to see your blackberry screen and applications and access them on a 10, 12, or bigger screen would be glorious, I don’t want the start up time, or other 3rd party window apps or windows for that matter, I just want an instant on and offsee my Blackberry screen and type from a larger keyboard thingamajig , just a bluetooth keyboard and a screen, just to make it a little more comfortable and usable. So I started searching the net and found ALMOST what I wanted….ALMOST… here —> Bayalink Liberty
which gave me everything I wanted except more charges to my data, this happens because it render’s your blackberry screen through Firefox, or IE and you have more data being presented and requested, same with their mail attachment service….so it was close, but no cigar, I still need something similar but simpler, how about a bluetooth Monitor…..Anyone, Ferris, Bueller,…Then there is RedFly same Idea as the Foleo, but for Windows Smartphones only So what I have done is started to test out using a bluetooth keyboard with the Blackberry While having it plug into the usb of my laptop and using Rove Mobile Viewer. So know I can see my blackberry screen better in bigger format and use my bluetooth keyboard to type faster and for longer……..Have I solved my issue…..apparently not, Blackberry’s only work with a few Bluetooth Keyboards (mainly the stowaway type) none of which I have, so now I need to buy a keyboard…no biggie, but would still really like an ALL IN ONE solution, isn’t there anyone able to make a program to simulated the BB screen on a PC and have the keyboard work as well……auuurgggggha.

So back to my original thought, a Foleo like companion for when you truly want to be mobile and as unplugged as cellular will let you be, even if you had no cellular connection you could still do it all from your BB and thingamabob, and then when you back within signal range send what you need.

Anyways I’m done my rant, if anyone knows of such a device, or knows of one coming down the wire, please let me know. Thanks from the aching thumbs, and my squinting eyes.

SEATTLE – June 3, 2008 – Pelago, creators of the mobile social discovery service Whrrl, today announced new mobile support for the BlackBerry Pearl and Curve. Available for free to millions of BlackBerry users in the U.S., Whrrl provides a new mobile medium for discovering and sharing local information on people, places, events and experiences.

At the nexus of social networking, local discovery and user-generated content, Whrrl combines mapping and micro-blogging technology into a unique social discovery experience. Whether accessed via the Web or mobile device, Whrrl provides users with an entirely new discovery pathway for finding and sharing local knowledge with friends and communities.

The release of the BlackBerry mobile application coincides with expanded events and calendar features on Whrrl, giving users an unprecedented amount of relevant local information from their mobile device. Whrrl can be directly downloaded to a user’s BlackBerry for free at www.whrrl.com.

“This is great news for BlackBerry users looking for a new mobile application that combines the mega-trend attraction of social networking and local discovery into a fun and useful experience,” said Darren Vengroff, CTO and co-founder of Pelago. “And for us, it is just as exciting as the growth rate among BlackBerry users, particularly within groups outside of the enterprise, which is showing huge growth.”

The Whrrl experience captures a person’s activities, cataloging an individual history of places visited and events attended through icons pinpointed on Whrrl’s built-in mapping application. User ratings and reviews of these places and events then determine how each is depicted on the Whrrl map, color-coded as either positive, neutral or negative-charged icons.

The user-contributed information that generates the map icons is shared through a real-time micro-blogging feature called the “Whrrld Feed.” In addition to sharing ratings and reviews, users can also instantly update others on their location or status through their Whrrld Feed by checking in via SMS, the Whrrl mobile application, or the Whrrl Web site. To ensure privacy, users themselves set the specific group of friends that can see their actual real-time location; other users, even other friends, cannot see their location unless given specific permission by the user.

“Whrrl creates a new way to discover and navigate a city’s numerous places and events by leveraging the collective knowledge of friends, acquaintances, and neighbors against a detailed map of the area,” said Jeff Holden, CEO and co-founder of Pelago. “Now, anyone with a BlackBerry can tap this tribal knowledge while on the go to find information like nearby restaurants and which are highly liked and then share real-time status updates and invite friends to join.”

Currently, the Whrrl service is available nationally in the U.S. with an information database detailing millions of businesses and events across the country.

They state that the service currently supports the BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl.

Check it out with your BlackBerry browser at: http://m.whrrl.com/

I have already admitted to my days with the Treo, Palm OS and my Treo 750 Windows Devices, and now know the error of my ways, but one of the Good and maybe Bad things about those phones were there ability to customize your today screens, menus and your button preferences. Now you can have some of that same ability with your Blackberry’s when it comes to menus and Buttons. I saw a couple different post on Launch pads and they peek my interest, once I saw the app I knew I had to have it. I purchased it and loaded it without isue, read the pdf and away I went. In no time I had instant access to twitter, camera, messenger, specific oftern used email address and phone numbers and sms addresses. She worked great, after configuring my Blackberry L Theme the way I like it. I took the rest of the apps that i needed quick access to and added them to Launch pads, and I haven’t looked back. Now I have just a little more control over my device than before, but not enough to goof it all up like other smart phones. The one thing that drove me a little bonkers on other smart phones was the ability to over customize, always changing things around and finding it hard to set up a good profile one that you wanted to keep. I will hand it to blackberry they give you just enough control to tweak and not destroy, and Launch Pads just adds icing to the cake.

and there Customer Service is A1, I contacted Fabian ( the creator), his reply was instant, polite and useful, he even ask what I liked, disliked and what I would like to see added….great job Fabian KUDOS.

So if you need a little more control and access over Blackberry I highly suggest this app, Lunch Pads.

Thanks Blackberry Gang for Reading
